Fall Electrical Safety Tips

Now that fall has arrived, it is the perfect time to check your home’s electrical system. Consider the following fall electrical safety tips to help keep you and your family safe from electrical problems in the colder months:

  • Check for loose plugs in outlets since they might overheat and start a fire.
  • Check that the ground fault circuit outlets reset correctly when the test button is pressed.
  • A protective cover should be fitted on unused outlets if there are young children present.
  • Call an electrician to evaluate the circuit and, if necessary, upgrade the electrical panel if you find yourself constantly resetting circuit breakers.
  • Ensure the condition of the electrical cords. Never patch an electrical cord with tape; always get a new one.
  • Check the smoke and CO detectors.
  • Make sure the light bulbs are the appropriate wattage for the size of the fixture by checking their wattage.

The following additional safety advice from the Electrical Safety Foundation International will help keep your house secure this Fall.

  • Look for unusual wear and tear on the power cords of cold weather instruments like leaf and snow blowers. Repair or replace damaged equipment as soon as possible.
  • Chargers for batteries that won’t be used again until spring should be unplugged and safely stored.
  • When outside, only use weatherproof electrical equipment, defend outdoor electrical equipment against dampness, and make sure a licensed repairman inspects and refurbishes any wet electrical equipment.
  • Maintain a clear path between dry leaves and outdoor lighting, outlets, and power cords.
  • Make sure that electric blankets are in good condition and have a certification from a reputable testing facility, such UL, CSA, or ETL. Power lines must not be cut, broken, or frayed.
  • When using an electric blanket, avoid putting anything on top of it, such as comforters, bedspreads, or tucking it beneath mattresses or children.
  • Pets should never be allowed to nap on an electric blanket.
